The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been crowned champions of the 2025 Unity Cup after a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Jamaica at a packed stadium in England.
The international friendly tournament, aimed at fostering camaraderie and unity among nations through sport, ended with an exciting draw in regulation time and a nerve-racking penalty shootout that showcased the Nigerian team’s composure under pressure.
The match began at a frenetic pace with Nigeria drawing first blood early in the 9th minute. Winger Moses Simon struck confidently after a slick assist from Cyriel Dessers, putting the Super Eagles ahead and giving Nigerian fans something to cheer about. However, the joy was short-lived as Jamaica responded quickly. Just three minutes later, Kaheim Dixon found the net, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to equalize for the Reggae Boyz.
Both teams entered halftime deadlocked at 1-1, and the second half picked up where the first left off—with end-to-end action and sharp attacking play. Nigeria took the lead once again in the 53rd minute through Villarreal forward Samuel Chukwueze, who slotted home a fine goal after a quick break.
Jamaica, however, were not to be outdone. In the 63rd minute, midfielder Jon Russell found space in the Nigerian box and headed in the equalizer unchallenged, making it 2-2 and setting the stage for a tense finish. Despite efforts from both sides, the deadlock remained until the final whistle, and the match was pushed into a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, the Super Eagles showed composure and confidence. Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Tolu Arokodare, and Bruno Onyemaechi all stepped up and converted their spot kicks with precision. The hero of the moment, however, was debutant Uche Chrisantus, who scored the decisive penalty to seal the victory for Nigeria.
