Former Nigerian senator and diplomat, Professor Jibril Muhammad Aminu has passed on aged 85.
He died on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, in Abuja after a prolonged illness.
Professor Aminu was a distinguished public servant, scholar, and medical expert. He began his academic journey at the University of Ibadan, where he obtained his first degree in medicine in 1965.
His academic pursuits took him further to the United Kingdom, where he earned a Ph.D. in medicine from the Royal Post-Graduate Medical School in London in 1972.
In addition to his medical expertise as a respected cardiologist, Aminu’s contributions to national development extended beyond the hospital walls.
Between 1999 and 2003, he served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, representing the country’s interests at a pivotal period in the nation’s post-military democratic transition.
Following his ambassadorial tenure, Professor Aminu transitioned into legislative politics, serving as a senator representing the Adamawa Central Senatorial District from 2003 to 2011.

During his time in the Senate, he was known for his contributions to health and education policies, and for advocating professionalism in public service.
His career also included academic leadership roles before venturing into diplomacy and politics.
He served as Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, NUC, and at various times, held positions within the Nigerian Medical Council and other professional bodies.
Professor Jibril Aminu is survived by two wives and nine children. His death marks the end of an era for many in the Nigerian political, academic, and medical spheres who regard him as a bridge between intellect and public service.
Tributes have begun pouring in from colleagues, government officials, and institutions across Nigeria, all describing him as a man of excellence, integrity, and deep patriotism.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
