Panic swept through Shari Mansur Street in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday as a fire broke out in a hotel accommodating hundreds of Nigerian pilgrims performing the 2025 Hajj.

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, in a statement issued by Fatima Sanda Usara, Assistant Director of the Information and Publication Division, disclosed that the fire occurred at Imaratus Sanan Hotel around noon, Saudi Arabian time.

The hotel was hosting approximately 484 Nigerian pilgrims from six private tour operator companies. Despite the intensity of the blaze, NAHCON reported that no lives were lost, and all pilgrims had already been relocated to Mina valley at the time of the incident, where they were observing one of the core rites of Hajj.

“Immediate emergency response by Saudi authorities and the hotel management helped to contain the fire swiftly and prevent it from spreading throughout the building,” the statement noted. The quick reaction played a significant role in ensuring there were no fatalities or serious injuries.

In response to the fire, NAHCON Chairman, Professor Abdullahi Saleh, visited the scene to assess the situation first-hand and directed that the affected pilgrims be relocated to a new hotel immediately.

The Commission also pledged to work closely with the affected tour operators to provide support and ensure that the pilgrims’ spiritual journey continues uninterrupted.

Eyewitnesses and NAHCON staff on the ground described the incident as alarming but credited the swift evacuation efforts of Saudi emergency services for avoiding what could have been a major tragedy.

“The safety of our pilgrims is paramount,” said a NAHCON official who accompanied the Chairman during his visit. “We are thankful there were no injuries and are committed to ensuring that all affected persons are relocated promptly and comfortably.”

This incident underscores the importance of emergency preparedness and coordination during large-scale religious gatherings like the Hajj, which brings millions of Muslims from around the world to Saudi Arabia each year. Nigerian officials have reassured families back home that all measures are being taken to protect their loved ones and continue the pilgrimage as scheduled.

Meanwhile, NAHCON says it will continue to monitor conditions at all accommodations housing Nigerian pilgrims and coordinate with Saudi authorities to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

As of press time, the cause of the fire was yet to be officially disclosed, though hotel staff and responders have launched an investigation into what triggered the blaze.

The Commission has urged the public, especially family members of pilgrims, to remain calm and trust that all necessary steps are being taken to safeguard Nigerian pilgrims during the remainder of the Hajj exercise.
