President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marked Nigeria’s 2025 Democracy Day with sweeping gestures of reconciliation, justice, and recognition by honouring a wide array of individuals who contributed significantly to the nation’s democratic journey.

Speaking at a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12, 2025, the President announced presidential pardons and posthumous national honours for iconic figures, activists, journalists, politicians, and human rights advocates — including Ken Saro-Wiwa, Kudirat Abiola, Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Wole Soyinka, and many others.

One of the most symbolic acts was the presidential pardon granted to environmental activist and playwright Ken Saro-Wiwa, along with eight other members of the Ogoni Nine, who were executed in 1995 by the military regime of General Sani Abacha after a controversial trial.

Their execution sparked global outrage and is considered one of Nigeria’s darkest moments. Posthumously, Saro-Wiwa was awarded the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), while his fellow martyrs — Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, and John Kpuine — each received the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

In the same address, Kudirat Abiola, wife of the late Chief MKO Abiola and a fierce advocate for democracy during the dark days following the annulled 1993 election, was honoured with the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR).

President Tinubu described all the honourees as individuals who “paid the price, used their voice, pen, and courage to shape the democratic space we now enjoy.”

  • Shehu Musa Yar’Adua (GCFR) – Posthumously honoured for his role in the democracy struggle.

  • Prof. Humphrey Nwosu (CON) – Conducted the 1993 presidential election.

  • Wole Soyinka (GCON) – Nobel Laureate, recognised for lifelong activism and advocacy for justice.

  • Femi Falana (CON) – Renowned human rights lawyer and constitutional advocate.

  • Bola Ige (CFR) – Former Attorney General and vocal democracy advocate.

  • Pa Alfred Rewane (CFR) – Financier of pro-democracy movements.

  • Pa Reuben Fasoranti (CFR) – Statesman and Afenifere leader.

  • Senator Shehu Sani (CON) – Civil rights activist and former senator.

  • Pa Sam Amuka-Pemu (CON) – Journalist and Vanguard publisher honoured for his societal contributions.

  • Bayo Onanuga (CON) – Journalist recognised for his role in pro-democracy media.

  • Prof. Olatunji Dare (GCON) – Distinguished columnist and public intellectual.

  • Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti (CON) – Activist and physician who stood against military rule.

  • Alao Aka Bashorun (CON) – Iconic legal mind and advocate for democracy.

  • Chief Frank Kokori (CON) – Labour leader who mobilised workers for democracy.

  • Dr. Alex Ibru (CON) – Media founder and democracy supporter.

  • Sen. Ayo Fasanmi (CON) and Sen. Polycarp Nwite (CON) – Veteran politicians recognised for their democratic ideals.

Other posthumous honourees included Chima Ubani, Emma Ezeazu, Fredrick Fasehun, Prof. Festus Iyayi, Dr. John Yima Sen, Alhaja Sawaba Gambo, Dr. Edwin Madunagu, and Dr. Nurudeen Olowopopo, each recognised for their distinct roles in advancing civil rights, political freedom, and public integrity.

President Tinubu’s speech highlighted June 12 as more than just a date but a symbol of sacrifice, resistance, and national aspiration. “These patriots gave everything — some their very lives — so that we may gather here today under a democratic constitution,” he said.

This year’s Democracy Day celebration marks one of the most extensive and emotionally resonant in Nigeria’s history, weaving the threads of past struggles with present recognition and a hope for a more united future.
