President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marked Nigeria’s 2025 Democracy Day with sweeping gestures of reconciliation, justice, and recognition by honouring a wide array of individuals who contributed significantly to the nation’s democratic journey.
Speaking at a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12, 2025, the President announced presidential pardons and posthumous national honours for iconic figures, activists, journalists, politicians, and human rights advocates — including Ken Saro-Wiwa, Kudirat Abiola, Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Wole Soyinka, and many others.
One of the most symbolic acts was the presidential pardon granted to environmental activist and playwright Ken Saro-Wiwa, along with eight other members of the Ogoni Nine, who were executed in 1995 by the military regime of General Sani Abacha after a controversial trial.
Their execution sparked global outrage and is considered one of Nigeria’s darkest moments. Posthumously, Saro-Wiwa was awarded the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), while his fellow martyrs — Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, and John Kpuine — each received the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
In the same address, Kudirat Abiola, wife of the late Chief MKO Abiola and a fierce advocate for democracy during the dark days following the annulled 1993 election, was honoured with the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR).
