Chelsea kicked off their FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a confident 2–0 win over Los Angeles FC on Monday, setting the tone for what promises to be an electrifying tournament.

In front of over 22,000 fans at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Chelsea’s dominance was clear from the onset. Pedro Neto opened the scoring in the 34th minute, slicing through LAFC’s defence after a slick pass from Nicolas Jackson, before curling the ball past veteran goalkeeper Hugo Lloris at the near post.

Despite LAFC showing some spirited moments of possession and creativity, they struggled to produce quality chances. Chelsea’s keeper Robert Sánchez came to the rescue around the 60th minute with a key save to deny Denis Bouanga, keeping the clean sheet intact.

The match saw Chelsea introduce Liam Delap, a promising 22-year-old striker signed from Ipswich Town, whose debut further buoyed the club’s supporters. Enzo Fernández sealed the win in the 79th minute, capping off a fluid attacking move that confirmed Chelsea’s status as early Group D favourites.

“It’s a high level against a quality team. If you give them a moment, they’ll punish you,” said LAFC midfielder Marky Delgado. On the other end, Chelsea’s Levi Colwill praised his team’s composure: “No matter who we’re playing, we play our football really confident.”

While Chelsea celebrated their win, LAFC must now regroup for crucial fixtures ahead — particularly their matchup against Flamengo, which could be decisive for Group D’s second spot.

As the competition moves into day two, all eyes shift to today’s action-packed fixtures from Groups E and F.

In Group F, Fluminense face Borussia Dortmund at 17:00 WAT in a clash between South American flair and German precision. Later at 23:00 WAT, Ulsan Hyundai will battle Mamelodi Sundowns in a game that could shape the group’s balance.

Meanwhile, Group E will see Argentina’s River Plate take on Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds at 20:00 WAT, with both teams looking to assert dominance early in the tournament.

With top clubs from across continents vying for global supremacy, the Club World Cup is fast proving to be a true showcase of football’s diversity, ambition, and elite competition.
