A young couple in Kano has sparked controversy after getting married without parental consent, prompting intervention from the Hisbah Board in the Kano Municipal Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on the night of Wednesday, July 2, 2025, when Fatima, the bride, was reportedly married off without the knowledge or approval of her parents. Her father has since lodged a formal complaint with the Hisbah Board, describing the union as unlawful.
Fatima’s mother, Fiddausi Abubakar, expressed shock when a group of youths informed her that her daughter had been married. She said she was unaware of any bride price being paid.

On the groom’s side, Mukhtar Musa Yakasai, father of Aliyu Mukhtar, stated that Fatima’s parents had previously informed them of the relationship between the two. However, he had told them his family was not ready for marriage. He said they were surprised to learn that the wedding had taken place without any involvement from either family.
Aliyu Abdullahi, who acted as Fatima’s guardian during the ceremony, said she personally requested that he conduct the marriage on her behalf. Usman Muhammad, who stood in for the groom, confirmed that Aliyu invited him to officiate the ceremony.
Both Fatima and Aliyu declared they were in love and had jointly planned the wedding. Fatima added that she personally received the bride price and pleaded with authorities not to separate her from her husband.
However, Hisbah Commander in Kano Municipal, Ustaz Hamidan Tanko Alasaka, stated that the marriage is invalid under Islamic law due to the absence of parental consent and proper procedures.
The case remains under investigation as religious authorities deliberate on the next course of action.
