Former President of Liberia, George Manneh Weah is in Nigeria to honor the memory of late Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as “a pillar of stability” in the West African region and a steadfast friend.

Weah made this tribute during a solemn condolence visit to Abuja where he signed the official Book of Condolence in Buhari’s memory.

Flanked by a framed portrait of the late Nigerian leader, Weah spoke briefly to the press following the signing. “I came to pay homage to a man whose leadership contributed immensely to peace, stability, and democracy—not only in Nigeria but across West Africa,” Weah stated. “President Buhari was a great friend of Liberia, and his contributions to our democratic journey will never be forgotten.”

Weah, who is on an official visit to Nigeria, had earlier met with Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to discuss deepening cooperation between Liberia and Nigeria. His presence at the Nigerian capital adds a layer of diplomatic significance to the ongoing week of national mourning declared in Buhari’s honor.

Back in Monrovia on July 13, Weah had already issued a heartfelt statement describing Buhari as a “steadfast partner” who played a key role in Liberia’s peaceful political transition in 2017.

He highlighted Buhari’s unwavering support for democratic norms, conflict resolution, and regional peace-building efforts. “He was not just a Nigerian statesman, he was a West African icon,” Weah emphasized.

Weah also recalled several bilateral engagements between Liberia and Nigeria during Buhari’s administration, saying that the relationship fostered stronger ties in trade, education, and security.

“He was a leader whose influence transcended Nigeria’s borders. His legacy will guide future generations of African leaders,” Weah added.
