The Anambra State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Okechukwu Akaneme, a former President of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, ONICCIMA.
In a statement released on Saturday in Awka, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the command is aware of a troubling narrative circulating on social media regarding Akaneme’s death.
Ikenga described Akaneme as a respected figure in the Onitsha business community, noting that he reportedly sustained life-threatening injuries during an enforcement operation by the Anambra State Waste Management Authority, ASWAMA, allegedly accompanied by armed police officers, on October 11, 2024.
“It was alleged that the operation, carried out to enforce waste management compliance, led to Mr. Akaneme sustaining spinal injuries from which he never fully recovered, eventually resulting in his death on July 10,” Ikenga said.
He extended the command’s condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, and colleagues, acknowledging Akaneme’s contributions to Anambra’s socio-economic growth.

The police spokesperson explained that an internal inquiry had earlier been initiated regarding the October 2024 incident. Preliminary findings indicated that some actions taken during the enforcement operation deviated from standard law enforcement procedures.
Following Akaneme’s passing, the command has now reopened the case. The Commissioner of Police has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Awka, to immediately review the case file and carry out a comprehensive investigation.
Ikenga emphasized that the investigation will examine both the actions and possible negligence of individuals or agencies involved.
“The command reaffirms that no officer of the Nigeria Police Force is above the law. Any personnel found guilty of misconduct or unlawful behavior will face appropriate disciplinary and legal action,” he stated.
He added that the police are collaborating with relevant state agencies to ensure full cooperation in uncovering the truth.
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikioye Orutugu, assured the public of the command’s commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of human rights. He pledged that no stone will be left unturned in this renewed investigation
