With three second half goals, the Super Falcons of Nigeria Saturday night completed Mission X in grand style by defeating the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco to win the 2024 Women African Cup of Nations, WAFCON.

The indomitable ladies have now won the championship a record 10 times.

It was de ja vu for Morocco. Having lost to South Africa in the last final, also on home soil, it’s heartbreak again to face defeat as the players wept uncontrollably at the blast of the whistle.

President Tinubu hailed the victory as a symbol of resilience and national pride.

‎”The Super Falcons’ spectacular performance tonight in Rabat, coming from behind to beat a spirited Moroccan side playing in front of a passionate home crowd, exemplifies the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit.”

‎” With hard work, dedication, and tenacity, you have achieved the mission the nation dreamed of and prayed for.

“The nation looks forward to welcoming our champions. Congratulations! Nigeria celebrates you,” he said.

‎The President had earlier on his official X handle encouraged and pepped up the team to go all out for victory.

‎”My beloved Super Falcons! tonight, you stand at the cusp of history as you face the host nation, Morocco, in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

‎”Your performance at this tournament over the past three weeks has been awe-inspiring. You have represented our country with pride, honour, and strength.

‎”In the pitch and off the pitch, you have demonstrated true sportsmanship,” the President said before the final.

‎‎Nigeria’s First Lady, who has supported the team with prayers and words of encouragement, congratulated them on the historic victory.

She said the team had once again lifted the pride of the nation and cemented their place as “Queens of African football.”

She thanked the team for making the nation proud.

“You have printed your names in gold and inspired millions across the continent.

“I celebrate you, our beautiful and lovely Super Falcons for the landmark victory of your 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations championship.

“Your resounding 3-2 victory is indeed remarkable and commendable.
It is not just another trophy; it is a testament to your hard work, consistency, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit. We thank God for this sweet victory.”

Credible News reports that Nigeria had won the championship nine times before facing host-nation Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations.

Nigeria beat defending champions South Africa 2-1 in the semifinals.
Morocco overcame Ghana in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time in their last-four clash. Ghana beat South Africa on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the bronze-medal match on Friday. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
