The Zamfara State Government has formally announced the appointment of Alhaji Abdulkadir Ibrahim Bello as the 16th Emir of Gusau.
His appointment was approved by Governor Dauda Lawal following traditional recommendations by the Gusau Emirate kingmakers, in line with the established customs and laws governing the emirate.
Alhaji Abdulkadir Bello, who now holds the revered title of Sarkin Katsina Gusau, succeeds his late father, Alhaji Ibrahim Bello, who passed away on July 25, 2025.
The late emir had served the people of Gusau with distinction for 10 years before his demise, earning widespread respect across Zamfara and beyond.
According to a statement issued in Gusau on Tuesday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Malam Abubakar Nakwada, the appointment of Abdulkadir Bello followed due consultation with the traditional institutions and stakeholders of the emirate.
The SSG emphasized that the decision was a reflection of the will of the kingmakers and a commitment to upholding the traditions of the Gusau Emirate.
Before his elevation to emir, Alhaji Abdulkadir Bello held the traditional title of Bunun Gusau, a position of high regard in the emirate’s council.
As the eldest son of the late emir, his new role symbolizes a continuation of the leadership lineage and heritage of the Gusau royal family.

He is also a direct descendant of the renowned Islamic scholar and emirate founder, Malam Sambo Dan Ashafa, further strengthening his legitimacy as a cultural and spiritual leader.
Governor Dauda Lawal, in his congratulatory message to the new emir, called on him to carry forward the noble legacy of his forefathers. He urged the new monarch to be a unifying figure who would champion peace, progress, and social cohesion throughout the emirate and the state.
“We are confident that your reign will mark a period of development, cultural preservation, and unity for the people of Gusau,” the governor said. “You are stepping into a revered role at a time when strong, visionary traditional leadership is more crucial than ever.”
The emir’s appointment comes at a time when traditional institutions in Nigeria continue to play vital roles in fostering local governance, conflict resolution, and community engagement, especially in regions faced with complex social and security challenges.
Residents of Gusau and other stakeholders have responded positively to the news, expressing hope that the new emir will bring about continued stability and promote the socio-cultural values of the emirate.
Alhaji Abdulkadir Ibrahim Bello is expected to formally assume his duties in a traditional ceremony to be held in Gusau in the coming days.
The event is anticipated to draw dignitaries from across the state and other parts of Nigeria, in celebration of a new chapter in the history of the Gusau Emirate.
