Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has firmly rejected any peace proposals that require Ukraine to give up territory to Russia, ahead of a high-stakes summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin scheduled for August 15 in Alaska.
As tensions remain high over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, President Zelensky issued a resolute statement affirming that Ukraine would never surrender its land to Russian forces. This declaration comes in direct response to U.S. President Trump’s recent remarks suggesting that a peace deal might include “some swapping of territories” to benefit both sides.
The Trump-Putin summit, set to take place in Alaska next week, marks the first direct meeting between the two leaders since 2021 and is intended to advance talks on a potential ceasefire and resolution to the war that began over three and a half years ago. Trump has expressed optimism about reaching a peace agreement soon, but the details remain unclear.
Zelensky, speaking through a video address and posts on Telegram, underscored that Ukraine’s borders are constitutionally protected and are non-negotiable. He emphasized that Ukrainians “will not gift their land to the occupier” and warned that any peace talks excluding Kyiv would result in “dead solutions” that undermine lasting peace.

The Ukrainian president stressed the importance of Ukraine’s active participation in all negotiations, dismissing suggestions of territorial concessions as rewarding Russian aggression. He also reiterated his readiness to work with international partners, including the U.S. and European allies, to forge a genuine and durable peace.
Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President JD Vance and British officials have been engaging with Ukrainian and European leaders to discuss the upcoming summit, reflecting broader concerns in the West about the potential marginalization of Ukraine in talks dominated by Moscow and Washington.
Critics of the Trump-Putin meeting argue that convening without Ukraine risks sidelining the country’s interests and could embolden further Russian advances. Zelensky’s unequivocal stance signals Kyiv’s determination to defend its sovereignty at all costs, even as war fatigue grows among its people.
