President Bola Tinubu has reconstituted the governing council and board of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project, HYPREP, signalling a renewed commitment to accelerating the cleanup of oil pollution in the Niger Delta region.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially reconstituted the governing council and board of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project ,HYPREP, the agency tasked with addressing the environmental devastation caused by oil spills in the Niger Delta. The new appointments were announced to strengthen leadership and improve the agency’s effectiveness in managing the complex task of environmental remediation.

HYPREP, established in response to Nigeria’s commitment under the United Nations Environmental Program report on Ogoniland, has faced various challenges over the years, including delays in cleanup activities, funding issues, and allegations of mismanagement. The reconstitution of its governing council and board is seen as a strategic step to provide fresh direction and oversight.

In a statement, the presidency emphasized that the new council members are expected to bring expertise, transparency, and dedication to fast-track cleanup operations and ensure compliance with environmental standards. The renewed leadership is also charged with engaging local communities and stakeholders to foster trust and collaboration in the remediation efforts.

Environmental activists and Niger Delta stakeholders have welcomed the move, expressing hope that the new board will prioritize the health and livelihood of affected communities while holding oil companies accountable. The government’s focus remains on restoring degraded lands, promoting sustainable development, and preventing future pollution incidents.

President Tinubu’s action reflects his administration’s broader environmental agenda and commitment to addressing the Niger Delta’s ecological challenges as part of Nigeria’s sustainable development goals.

The reconstituted HYPREP governing council and board are expected to commence work immediately, with a mandate to accelerate project implementation and deliver tangible results for the communities long plagued by oil pollution.
