Red Sonja,’ an epic action adventure starring Matilda Lutz and Robert Sheehan, has grossed N10.9 million in its debut weekend at Nigerian cinemas.
FilmOne Entertainment, the Nigerian distributor, on Tuesday confirmed the earnings on its Instagram page.
It hailed the strong reception from cinema-goers in spite of competition from Hollywood blockbusters and Nollywood hits.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Red Sonja follows a fierce warrior who rallies outcasts in a battle against a ruthless tyrant threatening their survival.
Directed by M. J. Bassett, the film reimagines the classic sword-and-sorcery tale with modern action and fantasy elements aimed at today’s global audiences.
Its opening weekend figure places it behind the folklore film ‘Abanisete’, which has dominated the Nigerian box office for two consecutive weekends, grossing over N70 million.

It also enters a competitive market where titles like Deadpool & Wolverine and Twisters continue to draw strong crowds across major cinema chains.
Analysts say Red Sonja’s performance shows Nigerian audiences are increasingly receptive to fantasy action adventures, though it must sustain momentum to remain in the top rankings.
FilmOne described the opening as “encouraging,” stressing that the turnout demonstrates how Nigerian cinema-goers are embracing a wider range of stories and genres.
Industry watchers predict that the coming weekends will determine whether the film consolidates its gains or is edged out by stronger titles in the line-up. (NAN)
