The Ogun State Government has announced the constitution of an interim administrative body to oversee the affairs of Ijebu Ode after the death of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat said the body will be responsible for superintending over both administrative and traditional matters during the transition period until a new Awujale is installed.
The newly formed body will be chaired by Chief Folorunso Sunny Kuku (Ilamuren), with Chief Oluwaranti Lekan Osifeso (Madassa) serving as secretary. Other members include Chief Stephen Bakare Oluwalogbon, Chief Bisola Oluneye Okuboyejo, Chief Funmilola Okunowo, Prof. Jide Ajayi, Chief Tunde Odulaja, Chief Abimbola Okenla, Chief Agboola Alausa, Chief (Mrs.) Adebisi Oshibogun, and Chief Adebisi Adaran.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, in his message, reiterated his administration’s commitment to stability, continuity, and respect for Ijebuland’s cherished traditions.
He called on all Ijebu sons and daughters, at home and abroad, to support the administrative body in safeguarding peace and harmony during the transition.
“The cooperation of all stakeholders is crucial in ensuring a smooth and transparent succession process,” the governor said. “We urge our people to remain law-abiding and united as government continues to prioritize inclusiveness and the preservation of our cultural heritage.”

He further stressed that the government’s role during this period is to provide support, while ensuring that traditional protocols are duly respected.
The development follows the recent passing of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, at the age of 90.
Widely revered as the “Orisa Ijebu,” Oba Adetona ascended the throne in 1960 and became one of Nigeria’s longest-serving monarchs, spending more than six decades as Awujale.
Throughout his reign, he was known for his outspoken stance on governance, his commitment to Yoruba culture, and his contributions to education and social development.
The monarch’s legacy is particularly evident in the establishment of the Oba Sikiru Adetona Institute of Governance at Olabisi Onabanjo University, which continues to serve as a centre for leadership training and policy research.
The succession process for the next Awujale is expected to follow traditional rites and customs, with the newly formed administrative body ensuring order and continuity in Ijebuland until a new king is installed.
