Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s directive to the Armed Forces to urgently review security operations following the recent terrorist attacks in Darajamal, Bama, Borno State, where scores of people were killed.

Speaking in Abuja on Monday, Shettima described the killings as a tragic blow to the nation, extending heartfelt condolences to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the people of Borno, and the military personnel affected.

He stressed that the incident had plunged the nation into mourning but insisted that justice would be delivered for the bereaved families.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to Governor Zulum, the people of Borno, and the Nigerian military over the tragic loss of our compatriots. These deaths have left the entire nation in collective grief, but we are confident that justice will be served,” Shettima stated.

The Vice President explained that President Tinubu had already directed the Armed Forces to adopt new strategies and deploy advanced military technology, including additional drones and surveillance equipment, to track and eliminate terrorist groups across Nigeria.

According to him, the government is determined to strengthen security responses and ensure that such attacks are not repeated.

“We must learn from every incident and adapt our approach. That is why the President has instructed the military to review its operations and intensify efforts on all fronts,” he said.

Shettima also highlighted ongoing discussions around establishing state police, a measure Tinubu believes would enable a more localised and culturally sensitive response to security challenges.

“There are communities where knowledge of the terrain and culture is vital for effective operations. State police will help us close those gaps and enhance grassroots security networks,” he explained.

The Vice President assured that the federal government remains fully committed to supporting Borno State in addressing its persistent security challenges.

He praised the resilience of the people of the North-East, noting their sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, and offered prayers for the families of those killed in Darajamal.

Security analysts have warned that without sustained reforms and closer coordination between federal and state authorities, the insurgency in Borno could continue to claim innocent lives.

Shettima’s remarks therefore signal a renewed push from the presidency to recalibrate counter-terrorism strategies while also acknowledging the need for broader structural changes, including the possible decentralisation of policing.

The Darajamal attack marks one of the deadliest assaults in recent months in the region, underscoring the persistent threat of extremist groups despite years of military campaigns.

For many families, the Vice President’s message offers comfort, but the bigger test will be how quickly and effectively the Armed Forces can implement Tinubu’s directive to restore confidence and protect lives.
