Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has confirmed that he was invited by the Department of State Services, DSS, for questioning over the September 1, 2025, gunmen attack on his convoy in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.
The incident, which occurred in the state capital, shocked many Nigerians after unidentified assailants ambushed Malami’s convoy, leaving several of his aides and security personnel injured.
The brazen attack not only raised concerns about rising insecurity in the northwest but also triggered nationwide calls for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
In a statement issued on Monday, Malami revealed that his DSS invitation was connected to a petition allegedly initiated by influential politicians in Kebbi State.
He, however, expressed confidence in the agency’s handling of the investigation.
“I can confirm that I have been invited by the Department of State Services, DSS, for questioning in connection with the investigation into the attack on my person and convoy in Kebbi State on the 1st of September, 2025,” Malami said.
“The investigation, as I understand, is linked to a petition initiated by certain high-profile politicians in the state. I must commend the DSS for the professional and transparent manner in which they have conducted their inquiry. I remain committed to cooperating fully with the Department to ensure that their investigation is concluded successfully.”

Malami, who served as Nigeria’s Attorney General from 2015 to 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, has remained a strong political force in Kebbi State despite leaving office.
His enduring influence has often drawn both admiration and controversy, with critics accusing him of wielding disproportionate political power in the state.
The convoy attack has now fueled speculation of political undercurrents, particularly in a state where competition among elites has grown fiercer ahead of the next election cycle.
The DSS, known for its role in handling sensitive political and security-related cases, has yet to release official details about the line of inquiry.
However, its involvement signals that investigators are treating the matter as a potential security threat beyond a random criminal incident.
For now, the former AGF insists that he will stand by the investigation and trusts that the truth will emerge.
“This is about ensuring justice, accountability, and the safety of every Nigerian,” Malami noted, stressing that the incident must not be politicized to the detriment of security and peace in Kebbi State.
