Spain have confirmed that Manchester City midfielder Rodri Hernandez will miss their upcoming World Cup qualifying matches after suffering a hamstring injury during Sunday’s Premier League clash against Brentford.

In an official statement released on Monday, the Spanish national team announced that Rodri was “out of the squad because of injury” ahead of fixtures against Georgia and Bulgaria, scheduled for October 11 and October 14, respectively.

The 29-year-old midfielder, who was substituted in the 21st minute of City’s 3–1 victory, revealed after the match that he had felt discomfort in his leg — prompting medical staff to recommend precautionary withdrawal from international duty.

Rodri, who was instrumental in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, only recently returned to full fitness following a serious knee injury sustained in September 2024 that kept him out for most of last season.

His absence is expected to be a significant blow to coach Luis de la Fuente’s midfield options, given his leadership and playmaking influence.

The Spanish Football Federation did not indicate whether a direct replacement would be named, but sources suggest that Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi or Atletico Madrid’s Koke could be drafted in.

Meanwhile, coach Luis de la Fuente has already made one adjustment to the squad, calling up Celta Vigo striker Borja Iglesias to replace Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, who is also sidelined with an injury.

Rodri’s setback comes at a crucial stage for Manchester City, who are battling on multiple fronts in the Premier League and Champions League. Pep Guardiola is expected to rest the player for upcoming domestic fixtures to avoid aggravating the injury.

Regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world, Rodri was awarded the 2024 Ballon d’Or, cementing his status as a key figure for both club and country.

His tactical awareness, composure, and ability to dictate play have made him indispensable to Spain’s possession-based system.

Medical staff from both Spain’s national team and Manchester City will monitor Rodri’s recovery closely over the coming weeks.

While the exact duration of his absence remains unclear, initial assessments suggest he could be sidelined for up to three weeks, depending on his response to treatment.

Rodri’s injury adds to a growing list of fitness concerns for Spain as they look to maintain momentum in their World Cup qualifying campaign. Despite the setback, de la Fuente expressed optimism, noting that “the team remains focused and determined to continue our strong start.”
