U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to celebrate his 80th birthday with a UFC-style cage fight on the White House lawn, marking one of the most unconventional presidential events in American history.
Speaking in Virginia on Sunday, Trump said the martial arts showdown would be held on June 14, coinciding with his birthday and the lead-up to the United States’ 250th Independence anniversary.
The president described the upcoming spectacle as a “celebration of strength, endurance, and American spirit.”
According to Trump, the event will feature the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the world’s largest professional mixed martial arts organization, which combines techniques from boxing, wrestling, kickboxing, and other combat sports.
Unlike professional wrestling, UFC matches are known for their authenticity, intensity, and occasional bloodshed — factors that have made it both controversial and wildly popular among fans.
The initiative reflects Trump’s long-standing admiration for the UFC and its president, Dana White, a vocal Trump supporter who has campaigned alongside him for years.
White reportedly plans to invest about $700,000 in restoring the White House lawn after the event, ensuring the historic grounds are returned to pristine condition.
In September, mock-ups released by the White House showed an octagon-shaped cage set up on the South Lawn, surrounded by viewing stands and illuminated by massive floodlights.
The fighters’ traditional weigh-in ceremony will take place on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, two kilometres away, offering a dramatic backdrop for the pre-fight spectacle.
Trump had first floated the idea of hosting a fight in June 2024, originally linking it to the nation’s Semiquincentennial — the 250th anniversary of American independence in July 2026.

However, the decision to align the event with his own birthday has drawn both intrigue and criticism, with supporters calling it a symbol of American boldness and detractors labeling it a publicity stunt.
The president has frequently used entertainment-style events to connect with his voter base, emphasizing physical strength, patriotism, and spectacle.
His rallies often feature music, fireworks, and celebrity appearances — elements likely to be replicated during the UFC birthday event.
Political analysts suggest that the fight could serve as a public relations masterstroke for Trump, reinforcing his image as an energetic and unconventional leader heading into an election cycle.
Others, however, have warned that hosting a combat sport at the White House could blur the line between governance and entertainment.
Despite the controversy, the planned UFC birthday brawl underscores Trump’s flair for merging politics, performance, and populism — a formula that has defined much of his public life and presidency.
