Chelsea have been dealt another major injury setback as manager Enzo Maresca confirmed that midfielder Cole Palmer will remain out of action for at least six more weeks, prolonging his absence from competitive football.

Palmer, 23, has not featured for the Blues since being forced off midway through the first half during Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on September 20.

At the time, Maresca had expressed optimism that the England international would return shortly after the international break — but fresh medical assessments have extended that timeline.

“I was wrong,” Maresca told reporters during his pre-match press conference on Friday. “Unfortunately, he needs to be out for probably six more weeks. So, yes, this is the update.”

The Italian coach, however, clarified that Palmer’s condition did not require surgery, describing the injury as one that only needed time and careful rehabilitation.

“We are trying to protect Cole as much as we can,” Maresca added. “The most important thing is that when he comes back, he’s fully recovered.”

Palmer, who has been one of Chelsea’s standout performers since joining from Manchester City in 2023, has become central to the club’s attacking strategy. His creativity and composure in front of goal were crucial in the early stages of Maresca’s reign.

The manager admitted that replacing the midfielder will be a challenge, noting his unique skill set and influence on the team’s rhythm.

“For sure, we need to find a different solution,” Maresca said. “We don’t have another player like Cole because he is unique. He’s one of the best players in the Premier League, and losing him is difficult for any side.”

Chelsea will face Nottingham Forest on Saturday as they look to maintain momentum in the Premier League despite a growing list of injuries. Maresca hinted at tactical adjustments to compensate for Palmer’s absence, possibly turning to emerging academy talents and squad rotation.

The club hopes the midfielder’s recovery stays on schedule, allowing him to return before the busy festive period. Palmer’s injury adds to the challenges facing Maresca, who has been tasked with restoring Chelsea’s consistency after a mixed start to the season.
