A Nigerian-born lawyer, Margaret Obi, has made history as the first African-born individual to be appointed a High Court Judge in England and Wales, marking a major breakthrough for diversity and representation within the British judiciary.
The announcement has sparked widespread celebration among Nigerians worldwide, who hailed her elevation as a proud reflection of Nigerian excellence on the global stage.
Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was among those who publicly congratulated Mrs. Obi.
In a message shared via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday, Obi described the appointment as “a well-deserved recognition of excellence and integrity.”
He praised the new judge’s journey from private legal practice to the upper echelons of the UK judicial system, noting that her story exemplifies “hard work, integrity, and professional excellence.”
“Her remarkable journey from solicitor to the Bench, with over 27 years of legal practice and seven years of judicial service, stands as a testament to resilience and global competitiveness,” Obi stated.

The former governor, however, took the opportunity to clarify a common case of mistaken identity that had spread across social media, as some Nigerians assumed that Mrs. Margaret Obi was his wife.
“Due to the similarity in names, Mrs. Obi is often mistaken for my wife. But for clarity, she is not,” he wrote, adding that his spouse has always officially gone by Mrs. Margaret Peter-Obi to distinguish herself professionally.
Peter Obi further used the occasion to underscore the importance of building a society that rewards merit and integrity, stressing that the achievement “reflects the outstanding potential of Nigerians who excel when provided equal opportunities.”
He concluded with his signature note of optimism: “A new Nigeria is POssible – PO.”
Justice Margaret Obi’s career spans nearly three decades in the legal profession, where she earned respect for her competence and fairness.
Her appointment to the High Court Bench is not only a personal triumph but also a symbolic win for Africans in the diaspora, especially Nigerian professionals who continue to excel in global institutions.
