The Edo Government has ordered the immediate closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area following intelligence reports of a kidnap threat against students.
The Edo State Ministry of Education has ordered the closure of three schools in Akoko Edo Local Government Area following credible security threats.
In a circular dated June 9 and signed by Permanent Secretary Mr. Enodolomwanyi Otamere, the affected schools were listed as Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School.
The directive came after a Department of State Services, DSS, intelligence report warned of an alleged plan by suspected bandits to abduct school children in Edo North Senatorial District.
According to the DSS memo dated June 5, intercepted communications revealed that the suspects, frustrated by failed attempts to kidnap wealthy individuals, were plotting to target students to attract government attention and secure ransom payments.
One suspect, aged 25, was arrested on June 4 while allegedly conducting surveillance around Makeke Secondary School, heightening fears that preparations for the attack were underway.
The DSS advised authorities to strengthen protection around schools, deploy additional personnel, and enhance collaboration with local vigilante groups and hunters.
