Probe shows food, transport prices stable in Onitsha

Commercial activities in Onitsha, the economic hub of Anambra remain the stable ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

It was reported on Friday that economic activities were in top gear, as there were no cases of panic buying or hike in transportation fare across Onitsha.

Investigations revealed that prices of food items, activities at motor parks, transportation fare, across Onitsha metropolis remained stable.

Speaking during an interview, some residents noted that there was no need for any form of panic buying or increase in transportation fare as security had improved in the state.

A resident, Mr. Donatus Obidihe, while reacting on the stable economic activities witnessed in Onitsha ahead of Saturday’s governorship election said that the citizens had suffered series of insecurity before, and they have learnt from it.

According to him, most people in Onitsha metropolis are traders and attach huge importance to their business.

“The people had suffered a lot of insecurity in the past, and they had learnt from it, elections would come and go and the people will remain”, he said.

A driver, Emeka Okoye, who plies Old Road to Onitsha Main market, attributed the stable transportation fare to stable economic activities, saying that passengers were more for all the drivers.

“Why will any driver hike price of transportation when he has enough passengers on the road wanting to board to their various destination.

“The prices of fuel or diesel remain the same, it be wicked of any driver to take advantage of election to increase prices”, he said.

A motor parts deal, Mar Paul Enemuo, explained that activities at the park were unchanged as people have no need to travel out of the state due to fear of attacks.

“Why will anyone want to travel out of the state to their respective villages due to fear of insecurity arising from their election?

“As you can see, activities at our park remain the same, everybody minding their business, there is no need for price hike,” he said.
