Donald Trump’s constant warnings about next year’s World Cup have caused fresh jitters, with politics refusing to go away from the sport.
In under eight months, the United States will co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside Mexico and Canada, but there are still numerous hurdles to overcome.
The American president has repeatedly warned that he won’t hesitate to relocate some games due to security threats.
Trump has singled out Boston, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles as areas of concern.
“If any city we think is going to be even a little bit dangerous for the World Cup, or for the Olympics, but for the World Cup in particular, because they’re playing in so many cities, we won’t allow it to go. We’ll move it around a little bit,” he said.

The comments put him at loggerheads with FIFA vice-president Victor Montagliani, who reminded him that the tournament was under FIFA, not the US government.
FIFA has agreements with the specific host cities to host the World Cup but will need the national government to provide security.
In another story, New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is against FIFA’s ticket policy for the 2026 World Cup.
Mamdani, who will be sworn in on January 1, is a staunch football fan and a supporter of Premier League giants Arsenal.
FIFA’s dynamic pricing has caused problems with Mamdani launching a ‘Game over greed’ petition.
