A 27-year-old man identified as Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume is facing prosecution by the Department of State Services,DSS,over alleged social media posts calling for a military coup and inciting hatred against the government.

The secret police has filed a six-count criminal charge against him before the Federal High Court in Abuja, accusing him of using his verified X (formerly Twitter) account to promote messages described as threatening to national peace and stability.

The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025, was filed by DSS counsel, A. M. Danalami, on November 11, 2025. The agency alleged that Onukwume, who resides at Umusayo Layout in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, committed the offences in October 2025 by repeatedly posting comments that glorified military takeover and discredited democratic governance.

The DSS said Onukwume’s online statements were calculated to cause fear, alarm, and public unrest, in violation of Sections 46A(1) and 59(1) of the Criminal Code Act, as well as Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2024 (as amended).

In one of the charges, the prosecution alleged that the defendant wrote:

“A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigeria government and join the AES. That is all we need now.”

The DSS maintained that the post was made with the intent to disturb public peace and create fear and disaffection within the country.

In another count, Onukwume was accused of writing:

“It will happen eventually, Nigerian. The military needs your support now! Only them can save this country. The bastard in Aso Rock has basically sold this country to the West and they run our intelligence apparatus. Only the military can reset this country.”

The security agency described the statements as deliberate attempts to incite the public against the government and encourage unlawful overthrow of the constitutional order.

Another part of the charge cited a separate post where Onukwume allegedly stated:

“Tinubu has to go and APC has to die for Nigeria to have any semblance of normal life. And if you think your stupid votes can remove Tinubu, I’m here to tell you that you’re a fool.”

According to the DSS, the language of the posts suggested a pattern of deliberate provocation, designed to create hatred, contempt, and hostility toward the Federal Government. The agency added that the conduct was contrary to Nigeria’s cybercrime laws and national security regulations.

The charges further allege that Onukwume knowingly and intentionally used his verified social media platform, @theagroman, to cause “annoyance, inconvenience, danger, and needless anxiety” against the government and public institutions.

The DSS emphasised that his actions were capable of disrupting national peace and endangering democratic stability, describing his posts as “reckless, inciting, and dangerous to the unity of the country.”

Onukwume is expected to be arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja before the end of the week, where he will take his plea on all six counts.
