Several persons were feared dead on Friday night after a powerful gas explosion rocked the Bioku-Alaadun area of Ibadan in Ona Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The incident occurred when a tanker delivering gas to a retail shop reportedly exploded during the discharge process. Witnesses said the blast was sudden and violent, sending flames into nearby structures and causing panic across the community.
Among those feared dead were the owner of the gas outlet and several residents who were close to the facility when the explosion occurred. The number of casualties could not be immediately confirmed as emergency responders continued to work through the night.
Confirming the development, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Yemi Akinyinka, said firefighters and emergency personnel were already on the ground battling the resulting fire and assessing the level of damage.
“Our men are there; they are still working,” Akinyinka told reporters. “Yes, the incident happened while gas was being discharged. Information on casualties is still being gathered.”

Residents described scenes of confusion as people fled the area to escape the fire and possible secondary explosions. Some nearby buildings reportedly sustained damage from the blast, while several injured persons were rushed to hospitals for treatment.
Authorities have cordoned off the affected section of the community to prevent further harm and to allow emergency responders unhindered access. The cause of the explosion is yet to be officially determined, but preliminary reports suggest a likely spark or leakage during the gas transfer process.
The Oyo State Government is expected to issue a detailed statement after the ongoing emergency operations and investigations provide full clarity.
