A commercial bus collided with a truck killing six people on the Awka–Onitsha expressway as FRSC blaming reckless overtaking and urging motorists to prioritise road safety.
The Anambra Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mrs Bridget Asekhauno, confirmed the incident in Awka, describing it as “a deeply preventable tragedy caused by reckless driving.”
According to Asekhauno, the accident involved a yellow-and-black tipper truck with registration FGG 21 XV and a red commercial bus marked XQ 398 AA.
She explained that eyewitness accounts revealed the bus was transporting passengers from Ebonyi State to Onitsha after a Catholic Women Organisation burial. In a rush to make up for travel delays, the driver allegedly engaged in dangerous overtaking, resulting in a head-on crash with the oncoming tipper.
The commander said 32 occupants were onboard the bus nine men and 23 women. The crash killed six people, two men and four women, while five women sustained varying degrees of injuries. The remaining 21 passengers survived unharmed.
Emergency responders transported the injured and deceased to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, where medical personnel confirmed the fatalities.
