The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has directed former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to appear before its investigators every day throughout December as part of an ongoing probe into the whereabouts of $490 million Abacha loot recovered through a Mutual Legal Assistance request.

A credible EFCC source told the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday that Malami, who was invited for questioning on Saturday, has also been barred from leaving the country for one month. His passport was seized as part of standard investigation procedures.

According to the source, the daily interrogation schedule was necessitated by the volume of documents, the sensitivity of the investigation, and the seriousness of the allegations surrounding the recovered funds.

“He will be reporting every day from Dec. 1 to Dec. 31,” the source said. “We didn’t say he stole money, but he must account for the $490 million Abacha loot secured through MLAT.”

The source added that Malami has several issues to clarify and that the EFCC would release its findings only after a thorough review of all available evidence.

In a reaction, Malami through his media aide, Mohammed Doka described the probe as a political witch-hunt, insisting the allegations are “baseless, illogical, and devoid of substance.”

He confirmed honouring the EFCC invitation on Nov. 28, describing the engagement as “fruitful,” and expressed confidence that the investigation would vindicate him.
