Team Kwara, representing the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, achieved a remarkable victory by securing the gold medal for Nigeria at the 2025 Asia Parliamentary International Debate Competition in the Junior Secondary School category.
This accomplishment highlights the team’s dedication and excellence on an international stage, marking a significant milestone for both Kwara State and Nigeria in academic competitions.
The championship, held at HELP University in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, featured 16 countries across Asia, Africa, and Europe. Team Nigeria—represented by Kwara SUBEB—emerged victorious in the grand finale after defeating Team Cambodia to secure the overall title.
This historic triumph marks Nigeria’s first-ever international debate championship win in this category and reinforces Kwara State’s growing reputation as a leader in academic and intellectual competitions.

Kwara SUBEB Press Secretary, Mrs. Aminat Abiola Atere described the victory as a reflection of the brilliance, discipline, and resilience of the young debaters who have continued to justify Governor AbdulRazaq’s heavy investment in basic education.
“This feat is a clear testament that His Excellency, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, is rounding off the year 2025 on a high note. “The outstanding performance of Kwara students on the global stage has once again brought pride to both the state and the nation,” she said.
The achievement in Malaysia comes on the heels of their victory at the 2024 Presidential School Debate Championship in Abuja. It also crowns Kwara’s consistent performance at national levels, having previously won the Presidential School Debate of Nigeria in 2021, 2023, and 2024.
Earlier in May 2024, the team represented Nigeria at the World School Debate Championship in Singapore, where they reached the quarterfinal stage—another remarkable performance for the state.
Mrs. Atere noted that the State Government remains grateful to Almighty God for granting the team journey mercies, good health, and strength throughout their participation. She added that Governor AbdulRazaq’s unwavering support and commitment to expanding educational opportunities continue to elevate Kwara students to international prominence.
In further demonstration of this commitment, the Governor has approved Team Kwara’s participation in the 2025 edition of the Presidential School Debate of Nigeria, scheduled for December 14–18 in Abuja. The competition will be hosted by the Federal Ministry of Education.
