FThe Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission,FCCPC, has broadened its investigation into ticket pricing practices by some airlines on selected domestic routes, amid concerns over possible violations of consumer protection and competition laws.

Ondaje Ijagwu, Director of Corporate Affairs at the FCCPC, said the expansion aims to examine pricing templates and practices that could be detrimental to consumers, particularly in the South-East and South-South regions, as the festive season approaches.

“Concerns have been raised about what appears to be coordinated manipulation or exploitation in airline ticket pricing on certain routes,” Ijagwu said. “The ongoing investigation targets operators on the identified routes.”

The Commission noted that earlier this year, Air Peace had filed a court action to prevent the FCCPC from examining its pricing mechanisms following public complaints. Ijagwu clarified that the current inquiry proceeds independently of the ongoing litigation.

Tunji Bello, FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, emphasized the Commission’s role in safeguarding consumer welfare.

“We are not a price control board, but the FCCPA 2018 empowers us to prevent consumer exploitation. When evidence indicates anti-consumer practices, we will act decisively,” he said.

The FCCPA grants the Commission authority to monitor economic activities, detect anti-competitive or restrictive practices, and conduct investigations deemed necessary under Sections 17(b) and 17(e).

While not setting prices, the Commission’s mandate ensures that markets remain competitive and pricing transparent, fair, and free from collusion.

Ijagwu further explained that the investigation will review arbitrary spikes in airfares, the rationale behind reported increases, and any practices undermining fair competition.

“Where evidence confirms a breach of the Act, FCCPC will apply appropriate enforcement measures,” he said.

The Commission promised updates on the ongoing aviation investigation in due course.
