The Bayelsa State Government has declared three working days of mourning in honour of Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo who passed on Thursday while on duty.
The declaration was contained in a statement signed on Friday by the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Hon. (Mrs.) Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai.
The mourning period commenced on Friday, December 12, with directives that all flags across the state fly at half-mast in honour of the late deputy governor.
The government confirmed Ewhrudjakpo’s death about 24 hours after his demise on Thursday. He was 60 years old and serving his second term in office.
Ewhrudjakpo reportedly collapsed while heading to a scheduled meeting within his office at Creek Haven, the Bayelsa seat of power.
He was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where he was later confirmed dead. His sudden collapse triggered palpable tension within Creek Haven and across parts of the state on Thursday.

Describing his death as a painful loss, the state government said Ewhrudjakpo’s passing had left a deep void in Bayelsa and the nation at large.
“His demise is not just painful, it is a great loss to the Government, people of Bayelsa State and the nation,” the statement read.
The government highlighted Ewhrudjakpo’s long record of public service, noting that he served Bayelsa State with distinction as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, and Deputy Governor from 2020 until his death.
Governor Douye Diri, on behalf of the government and people of Bayelsa State, expressed heartfelt condolences to Ewhrudjakpo’s wife, Her Excellency, Barr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Ewhrudjakpo, his children, the Ewhrudjakpo family, the Ofoni Federated Community, former Governor and Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, and all citizens of the state.
Consequently, the governor declared a state mourning for three working days in honour of the late deputy governor, beginning from Friday, with all flags ordered to fly at half-mast.
Governor Diri also prayed for God’s comfort and strength for the bereaved family and the entire people of Bayelsa State as they mourn the loss of a key leader and statesman.
