An explosion has occurred near the Tebijor, Okpele, and Ikporo communities in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State, as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC, Limited confirming the incident, which took place around 17:50 hours on Wednesday.

In a statement issued by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., Andy Odeh, the company explained that its initial field checks showed a pressure drop on an NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company pipeline located within the area.

The pressure drop, he said, aligned with signs of loss of containment, suggesting that the pipeline may have been compromised.

Odeh stated that the specific cause of the explosion has not yet been identified. A thorough investigation, currently in progress, will determine what triggered the incident once all assessments are completed.

He emphasized that the company’s immediate concern is the safety and well-being of residents in the nearby communities, as well as the protection of the environment surrounding the site of the explosion.

He added that NNPC has activated its emergency response procedures to ensure swift and coordinated action.

The statement noted that emergency teams are working closely with relevant authorities, security agencies, and community leaders to manage the situation, limit any further risk, and provide necessary support to affected areas.

Odeh reaffirmed NNPC Limited’s commitment to upholding the highest operational, safety, and environmental standards.

He assured the public that additional verified details will be shared as soon as further information becomes available.
