Panic gripped the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State after the party’s council chairman, Oyewole Mayowa Solomon, collapsed during a reconciliation meeting on Friday.
Solomon was participating in a meeting held at Iyara, the headquarters of Ijumu LGA, when he suddenly collapsed, leaving party leaders and other stakeholders at the gathering in shock and confusion. He was subsequently rushed to a hospital in Kabba, where he reportedly died shortly after arrival.
The meeting was convened by Funsho Olumoko, a former chairman of Ijumu Local Government Area, as part of efforts to reconcile party members, address internal disagreements and strengthen unity among APC stakeholders in the council.
According to reports, proceedings were ongoing when Solomon suddenly fell. Participants reportedly made efforts to assist him before arrangements were made to take him to the hospital for medical attention.
He was said to have died shortly after reaching the medical facility in Kabba. However, no official statement has been issued disclosing the cause of his death.
The development comes amid efforts by APC leaders in Ijumu to improve cohesion within the party ahead of future political activities and the 2027 general elections.
Earlier in August, APC stakeholders from the local government met in Iyara and endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term and Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo for another term.

The meeting brought together representatives of the 15 wards in the local government, alongside government appointees, former political office holders and other party leaders.
That gathering, however, was reportedly marked by disagreements over the leadership of the local government, with Solomon and some other party officials said to have walked out of the meeting.
The subsequent reconciliation meeting was aimed at addressing such differences and fostering greater unity among party members.
Solomon’s death has since drawn condolences from APC members and political associates. APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary Durosinmi Meseko described the deceased as a loyal and committed party member whose contribution to the growth and unity of the APC would be missed.
The APC chairman of neighbouring Yagba East Local Government Area, Abdurazaq Olusegun Abdulkadir, also mourned Solomon, describing his death as a sudden and painful loss to the party and Kogi West Senatorial District.
Former Kogi West Senator Smart Adeyemi similarly described the death as shocking and devastating, while calling for greater attention to health checks at party gatherings following the incident.
As of the time of filing this report, the circumstances surrounding Solomon’s sudden collapse and death had not been officially disclosed.
His death has nonetheless cast a pall over the APC in Ijumu, where efforts to reconcile party members and strengthen internal unity are ongoing.
