Nigerian businessman Obinwanne Okeke, popularly known as Invictus Obi, has been released from a United States federal prison after serving part of a sentence for a multi-million-dollar fraud case and is now facing deportation to Nigeria.
Obi, once celebrated as a rising entrepreneur and listed on Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30, completed about five years in custody following his conviction for involvement in an international business email compromise scheme that targeted U.S. companies.
He was arrested in August 2019 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation at Dulles International Airport while attempting to travel to Nigeria.
Prosecutors accused him of conspiring with others to hack corporate email accounts and divert legitimate business payments into accounts controlled by the fraud ring. Authorities estimated the losses from the scheme at about $11 million.
In February 2021, Obi pleaded guilty in a U.S. federal court to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and computer fraud. He was sentenced to a 10-year prison term, ordered to forfeit significant assets, and required to pay restitution to victims.

His release came earlier than the full sentence, reportedly due to sentence-reduction provisions and credits available under U.S. prison reform policies, including good-conduct time.
Following his release from the Bureau of Prisons, U.S. immigration authorities placed him into deportation proceedings.
With his prison term concluded, Obi is expected to be returned to Nigeria, as he does not hold U.S. citizenship. Officials have not publicly confirmed a specific date for his deportation.
The case drew widespread attention in Nigeria and beyond, highlighting the sharp contrast between Obi’s former public image as a successful young businessman and his eventual conviction for cyber-enabled financial crimes.
His return to Nigeria is expected to reignite discussions around fraud, accountability, and the responsibilities of high-profile entrepreneurs.
