Oyo  State Police Command has taken into custody a 22-year-old man over an alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl in Ibadan, following swift action by officers after a report of sexual assault was lodged.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said the case was reported at the Alakia Adelubi Police Division on Thursday, prompting an immediate response by the police.

He explained that the victim was quickly taken to a hospital for medical examination, while detectives visited the scene of the incident and tracked down the suspect, who was arrested and placed in custody.

Preliminary findings by the police indicate that the suspect allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of the minor after giving her an intoxicating substance.

DSP Olayinka said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Femi Haruna, has directed that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough and discreet investigation.

The police spokesperson stated that the Commissioner has reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for sexual violence, particularly crimes committed against women, children, or any member of the public.

He assured residents that the Oyo State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property, while encouraging the public to continue to support security agencies with timely and credible information.

DSP Olayinka added that the suspect has confessed to the alleged offence and will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
