The Delta State Government is partnering the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, to sensitise residents to register and obtain their National Identification Number, NIN.

The Director-General, Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau, Dr Fred Oghenesivbe, disclosed this on Friday that the partnership agreement was reached when the State Coordinator of NIMC, Mrs Grace Obels-Robinson, visited the bureau on Thursday.

He said the collaboration was strategically important because of the critical role of NIN in national development and security.

Beyond being a reliable means of identification, NIN is essential for effective planning of social welfare programmes, generation of credible population data and accurate capture of taxable income, he said.

The director-general lauded President Bola Tinubu for approving the mass registration of all unregistered Nigerians, describing it as a major step toward proper documentation at unit, ward, local government and state levels.

Oghenesivbe recommended the introduction of NIN cards embedded with chips containing comprehensive citizens’ data in line with global best practices.

He assured the commission of the bureau’s readiness to work closely with NIMC to sensitise Delta residents ahead of the exercise.

Speaking, Obels-Robinson said the visit was to seek the bureau’s collaboration in mobilising residents for the NIN enrolment exercise scheduled to begin on January 19.

She said the exercise would focus on unregistered adults and children and would run for six weeks across every ward in the state.
