Atletico Madrid delivered a ruthless first-half performance to dismantle FC Barcelona 4-0 in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final, leaving the Catalan giants facing a daunting task ahead of the return fixture.

The match exploded into life in the sixth minute when Eric Garcia accidentally turned the ball into his own net, handing Atletico an early advantage. The hosts doubled their lead eight minutes later as Antoine Griezmann calmly slotted home, capitalizing on Barcelona’s defensive lapses.

Atletico continued to press and were rewarded again in the 33rd minute when Ademola Lookman finished off a swift move. The nightmare first half for Barcelona was completed in stoppage time as Julian Alvarez struck in the 45+2 minute to make it four before the break.

Despite dominating possession with over 65 per cent and earning eight corner kicks, Barcelona struggled to turn control into clear chances. They managed only four shots on target, while Atletico were devastatingly efficient, registering eight accurate efforts from 12 attempts.

The visitors thought they had pulled one back early in the second half, but celebrations were cut short by a lengthy VAR review that lasted nearly eight minutes. The goal was eventually ruled offside, draining momentum and confidence from the Barcelona players.

Matters worsened in the 85th minute when Garcia was sent off, capping a difficult night for the defender and leaving his side with ten men. The dismissal effectively ended any hope of a late revival.

Barcelona’s problems were compounded by the absence of key players such as Raphinha and Pedri, whose creativity and energy were sorely missed. In midfield and attack, the team lacked the sharpness needed to trouble a well-organized Atletico side.

As usual, VAR decisions sparked debate among supporters, with some dragging rivals Real Madrid into the conversation. However, the dominant score line reflected Atletico’s superiority on the night.

With the second leg still to come, Barcelona face an uphill battle to overturn the four-goal deficit. Against an Atletico team in such clinical form, the task appears enormous, and the Spanish giants will need a remarkable turnaround to keep their cup hopes alive.
