President Bola Tinubu has emphasised that ethical leadership and robust institutions remain fundamental to achieving peace, justice, and sustainable development in an increasingly polarised world.
The Nigerian leader made the assertion on Friday at the Global Council for Political Renewal Conference in Cape Town, South Africa, where he was represented by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.
Addressing delegates on good governance, institutional reforms, and human rights, President Tinubu warned that ethical political conduct has become imperative in today’s divided global landscape.
“We are living in a time of deep political and ideological polarisation, where misinformation spreads faster than truth,” he told the gathering. “The challenge before us is how to protect free expression while restoring responsibility, civility and trust in public discourse.”

Speaking on Nigeria’s governance transformation, the President outlined his administration’s efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability, and institutional performance under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Public office is a trust,” he declared. “Our reforms are focused on modernising institutions, reducing leakages, and ensuring that governance decisions improve the daily lives of citizens.”
He highlighted ongoing people-centred social and economic interventions, youth-focused policies, and measures to regulate the responsible use of technology and digital platforms.
President Tinubu stressed that political renewal is not a one-off exercise but “a continuous effort to build institutions, protect democratic space, and deliver real value to the people.”
The Nigerian leader reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the founding principles of the GCPR, which promote dialogue, justice, and peace across nations. He underscored the importance of international cooperation in addressing global economic uncertainty and security challenges.
“No country is immune to these pressures,” he noted, adding that sustained dialogue and partnership are essential for global stability.
President Tinubu pledged Nigeria’s readiness to contribute to the development of a global roadmap for ethics, justice, peace, and development, leveraging the country’s experience as a diverse democracy committed to unity and inclusion.
The conference was attended by prominent world leaders, including the Prime Minister of Eswatini and GCPR President, Right Honourable Russell Mmiso Dlamini; GCPR Secretary General Prof. Furio Honsell; East Timor Prime Minister Jose Ramos-Horta; and the President of the National Assembly of the Central African Republic, His Excellency Simplice Mathew Sarandji, among other dignitaries.
The GCPR conference serves as a platform for political leaders and policymakers worldwide to discuss strategies for strengthening democratic governance and promoting ethical leadership.
