Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji  Disu, has set out a reform-focused agenda for the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, pledging modern, intelligence-led policing, tougher internal discipline and a renewed push to rebuild trust with communities.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved Disu’s appointment after accepting the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, with the Presidency citing the country’s security challenges and indicating that the Nigeria Police Council would be convened to consider a substantive appointment in line with extant law. In his inaugural address, Disu thanked the President for the “great confidence” reposed in him as the “23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police,” but cautioned that the moment demanded work, not celebration. “It is not yet time for me to be congratulated,” he said, stressing that expectations were high and must be surpassed as the Force intensifies efforts to protect lives and property nationwide.

He also paid tribute to former Inspectors-General, while addressing officers and men of the Force as a colleague who understood the daily demands of policing — from standing post in the rain to responding to distress calls amid public scrutiny. He acknowledged institutional strengths, but spoke of “wounds” including a trust deficit, outdated systems, resource gaps and misconduct that has damaged the Police image.

Disu said his tenure would be anchored on three commitments: professionalism and modernisation (including intelligence-led policing, forensics and digital tools), accountability and integrity (strengthened oversight and transparent discipline), and community partnership and public trust, describing community policing as a philosophy rather than a programme.

On Wednesday, after being decorated at the State House, Disu told correspondents that the Force would run a “zero tolerance” regime for corruption and human rights abuses, declaring: “the era of impunity is over,” and insisting that “the citizen… is the boss.”

He later assumed duty at Force Headquarters, taking his first salute from a quarter guard before the handover process.

Disu held a brief meeting with senior police officers before retiring home.
