The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Adamawa Chapter, has called for deliberate actions and supportive legislation to promote greater inclusion of women in leadership and governance.

The Chairperson of NAWOJ in the state, Ms Felicia Dauda, made the call at a news conference on Monday, in Yola to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8, with the 2026 theme: “Give to Gain.”

Dauda said the association joined the global community in celebrating women’s achievements and contributions to the society.

“The 2026 theme, “Give to Gain,” underscores the need to invest in women and create opportunities that enable them to contribute meaningfully to national development.

“When women are supported through inclusive policies, access to opportunities and representation in decision-making processes, societies benefit stronger institutions, sustainable development and balanced governance,” she said.

Dauda noted that despite the vital roles women play in community development and democratic growth, their representation in political leadership and governance remains low.

She commended the resilience and achievements of women across Adamawa and the country who continue to make significant contributions in various sectors despite existing challenges.

She said NAWOJ remained committed to responsible journalism that amplifies the voices of women and girls while advocating gender equality and policies that promote national development.

She called on government institutions, policymakers, civil society organisations and community leaders to intensify efforts toward empowering women and ensuring their meaningful participation in all spheres of life.

Dauda added that providing opportunities, support and recognition to women would help build a more inclusive, prosperous and equitable society.
