The Senate has confirmed the appointment of retired Rear Adm. Jamila Abubakar-Sadiq as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, National Commissioner, representing North-East.

This followed the adoption of the report of the Committee on Electoral Matters at the plenary on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the report was presented by Chairman of the committee, Sen. Simon Lalong (APC-Plateau).

Lalong, while presenting the report, said that the committee screened the nominee after receiving her resume and other relevant documents.

He said after due consideration of her level of exposure, experiences, performances, qualifications, and integrity, the committee recommended her confirmation by the Senate as INEC national commissioner representing North-East.

The Senate also confirmed the appointments of Usman Dakingari as a non+career ambassador and Ismail Yusuf as Chairman, National Hajj Commission of Nigeria.

Their confirmation followed the adoption of the report of Committee on Foreign Affairs after its presentation by the committee Chairman, Sen. Bello Abubakar (APC- Niger).

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, after the confirmation, commended the committees for their inputs, expressing the belief that the new INEC national commissioner would add value to Nigeria’s electoral system.

Akpabio also thanked President Bola Tinubu for appointing women in positions.

“I thanked the committees for the ways and manner in which they took time to screen these nominees and present them today.

“I also congratulate the nominees and wish them very fruitful endeavours in their various assignments.

“And I thank Mr. President for fishing out the right people for the right appointments. Congratulations to all,” Akpabio said.

The confirmation followed a voice vote by lawmakers after deliberations on the committee’s recommendations during plenary. Senators noted that the nominee demonstrated a clear understanding of the responsibilities associated with the role during the screening exercise.

Abubakar-Sadiq is expected to contribute to the strengthening of the electoral management body, particularly in the conduct of credible elections and the implementation of electoral reforms. Her appointment also fills the vacancy for the North-East geopolitical zone within the commission.

Meanwhile, lawmakers expressed optimism that the new appointees confirmed by the Senate would bring professionalism and integrity to their respective roles while urging them to discharge their duties in the interest of national development and public trust.
