The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, on Tuesday praised the transformation of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital,ISTH, describing the institution as a leading model in healthcare delivery, disease control, and epidemic preparedness.

Pate gave the commendation during an official visit to the hospital, where he commissioned several landmark projects executed under the leadership of the hospital’s Chief Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Reuben Agbons Eifediyi.

Among the projects commissioned were a road named after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,0 the IVEPCR Clinical Vaccine Trial Complex, the Clinical Trial Therapeutic Building, and another road named after Prof. Ali Pate.

The minister was received by the hospital’s management committee, staff, students of the College of Nursing Sciences, community stakeholders, traditional leaders, and other dignitaries in a ceremony that reflected the strong relationship between the institution and its host community.

Speaking after touring the newly completed projects, Pate expressed admiration for the pace of development at the hospital and praised its leadership for pursuing innovation and strategic growth.

“I am highly impressed by what I have seen here,” he said. “The level of innovation, infrastructure development, and commitment to excellence is commendable. This institution has not only positioned itself as a national asset but has also gained international recognition for its work in managing viral and emergent diseases.”

He also commended Eifediyi and his management team for what he described as dedication and professionalism, noting that their efforts had significantly raised the profile of the hospital within Nigeria’s healthcare system and beyond.

Addressing journalists and guests at the event, the minister said ISTH had demonstrated the expertise and capacity required to respond effectively to public health emergencies, especially infectious disease outbreaks.

“This hospital has demonstrated the technical expertise, infrastructure, and human capacity required to handle disease outbreaks of any scale,” Pate said. “With the right investments and continued support, ISTH can serve as a critical hub for epidemic preparedness and response, not just for Nigeria, but for the wider region.”

Pate was accompanied on the visit by Prof. George Gao, Director General of the China Academy of Sciences, and Dr. Hong Yang of the China CDC, who are in Nigeria to explore areas of collaboration between both countries on pandemic preparedness, disease response, and lessons from previous global health emergencies.

The visit is being seen as a major boost to the hospital’s drive to become a global centre of excellence in healthcare delivery, research, and training, while also reinforcing its strategic importance in Nigeria’s health security framework.

Observers say the minister’s endorsement could open the door for stronger collaborations, increased international partnerships, and further investment in the hospital’s infectious disease control and medical innovation programmes.

The strides recorded at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, stakeholders said, demonstrate the impact of visionary leadership, institutional commitment, and community support in strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system amid emerging global health challenges.
