Covenant University confirms death of 500-level student

The management of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun, has confirmed the sudden death of a 500-Level student of the institution, Toluwase Jesutunmise during a football training session on campus.

A statement by the Institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Timothy Anake, on Wednesday in Ota, said that the unfortunate incident happened on Monday.

The university described Jesutunmise as a diligent and vibrant student, who had participated in a student football training sessions before stepping out of the game to rest after complaining of leg pain and fatigue.

“The university stated his football mates observed that he was gasping for breath, and they responded swiftly.

“He was immediately rushed to the university’s medical center, which was located directly opposite the playing field.

“However, by the time he arrived at the emergency unit, he had stopped breathing,

“Medical personnel promptly initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation using an automated external defibrillator, but all efforts to revive him proved futile and subsequently pronounced dead, with preliminary reports attributing the cause to a previously undisclosed heart condition,” the statement read.

The university said that there was no negligence on the part of its medical staff, noting that all necessary equipment was available and appropriately deployed during the emergency response.

“The management of the institution, led by the Vice-Chancellor, remained at the Medical Centre until the arrival of the student’s parents and continued to support the family,

“The university community expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a painful moment not only for the parents, institution but for society at large, which has been deprived of the young student’s potential, attention turns to broader conversations around student health awareness and early detection of underlying medical conditions.

“The  university extended its condolences to the bereaved family and called on the public to keep them in prayers during this difficult period,” the university stated.
