Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar declared that the 2027 presidential election will be his last outing.

Atiku, who has been contesting to be president of Nigeria since 1992, disclosed this during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Wednesday.

Asked why Nigerians should vote for him after several attempts, considering his age, the ex-Vice President said Nigeria has a leadership problem, adding that he represents the past and the future of Nigeria.

“Certainly yes, because the stakes are higher and I believe that will be my last outing,” Atiku had said while responding to one of the questions thrown at him.

Atiku also recommended leadership training for young Nigerians, adding that the country needs it.

The African Democratic Congress chieftain said he remains committed to Nigeria but acknowledged that time and political realities would make 2027 his last shot.

The former presidential candidate emphasized the need for unity within the opposition, urging party leaders and stakeholders to put aside personal ambitions and work towards building a formidable coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress.

He also expressed concern over the current state of the nation, pointing to economic challenges, insecurity, and governance issues as reasons he believes experienced leadership is urgently needed.

He maintained that Nigeria requires bold reforms and inclusive policies to unlock its full potential.

Atiku, who served as vice president from 1999 to 2007, has been a consistent contender in Nigeria’s presidential elections, making him one of the most recognizable figures in the country’s democratic journey.

Abubakar said young Nigerians seeking power should learn the ropes from older leaders and gain experience first.

“I personally believe that they require experience and tutelage from the older generation,” he said.

Abubakar, who was the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate in 2023, defected to the ADC in 2025.
In 2024, Abubakar said he would “keep contesting” for the presidency as long as he is hale and hearty.

“Of course, I will keep contesting again and again as long as I am alive and healthy,” Abubakar said.
