Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has transmitted the name of Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as Deputy Governor.
The development follows what the government described as “wide consultation” before arriving at the decision.
The nomination was disclosed in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, on Wednesday. Garo, a former local government commissioner, emerged from a list of three nominees submitted by stakeholders of the All-Progressives Congress, APC.
The statement noted that the APC legacy group, led by former National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, had recommended three candidates for consideration, Murtala Garo, Alhassan Rurum, and Sulaiman Bichi, a former Secretary to the State Government.
According to the statement, the move is in line with Section 191,3, of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, which empowers a governor to nominate a deputy governor in the event of a vacancy.
The deputy governorship position became vacant following the voluntary resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026.

The governor, after what was described as wide consultations with key stakeholders, urged the Assembly to expedite action and grant approval for Garo’s nomination.
Garo, 48, is a seasoned political administrator with over two decades of experience in both elective and appointed positions.
He previously served as State Organizing Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor, and elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area. He also held positions as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, in Kano State and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
In the 2023 general elections, Garo was the Deputy Governorship candidate of the All-Progressives Congress, APC, in Kano State.
The nomination, according to the statement, is part of efforts by the Yusuf administration to strengthen governance and ensure effective service delivery in the state.
