Vehicular movement along the busy Ahmadu Bello Way in Abuja was brought to a standstill on Saturday as thousands of supporters and delegates thronged the venue of the national convention of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC.

The heavy traffic gridlock, spilt into adjoining roads and major intersections within the Central Area, leaving motorists stranded for hours.

Our correspondent observed that traders took over road shoulders and available open spaces around the venue to make brisk business from party supporters and guests attending the convention.

Supporters of the Kwankwasiyya and Obidient Movements were also seen dancing, chanting solidarity songs and jubilating around the venue, forcing guests and motorists to struggle through the crowd to gain access.

Security operatives were deployed to the area to manage the surging crowd and ease traffic congestion as political activities intensified around the convention ground.

The development comes as the NDC formally zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term, a decision widely seen as a major move capable of reshaping opposition politics ahead of the next general election.

The resolution was adopted during the party’s National Convention in Abuja after delegates unanimously backed a motion moved by the member representing Ogbaru Constituency of Anambra State in the 10th National Assembly, Afam Victor Ogene.

The zoning arrangement is also expected to strengthen the position of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and other southern aspirants within the emerging opposition coalition.
