The Nigerian film industry is in mourning following the death of actor Alexx Ekubo, aged 40, after a prolonged illness.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that news of the actor’s passing surfaced on Tuesday, with multiple media reports stating that he died after battling cancer related complications.

Ekubo was widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most recognisable stars, known for his performances in several hit films and television productions.

Born on April 10, 1986, the actor studied Law at the University of Calabar before venturing into entertainment.

He rose to prominence after emerging first runner-up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition, which opened doors to a successful acting career spanning over a decade.

There have been concerns over Ekubo’s health in recent months following his prolonged absence from social media and public appearances.

His last known social media activity was reportedly in late 2024.

Following reports of his death, tributes poured in from celebrities, colleagues and fans across social media platforms.

Popular actress, Funke Akindele, shared an emotional tribute, saying she had tried to reach him one last time and would always cherish their memories together.

Veteran actress, Kate Henshaw, also reacted with shock, posting that she hoped the news was not true.

Singer Peter Okoye, actor Bolanle Ninalowo and activist Omoyele Sowore were among public figures who also paid tribute to the late actor, describing him as talented, kind-hearted and deeply admired.

Comic actor Chinedu Ikedieze expressed disbelief over the development, while actor Uzee Usman lamented the loss of “a good soul”.

Fans across Nigeria and beyond also flooded social media with condolence messages with many describing Ekubo’s death as heartbreaking and a painful loss to Nollywood.

NAN reports that Ekubo was celebrated for his versatility, fashion influence and charismatic screen presence, featuring in notable productions such as “Weekend Getaway”, “The Bling Lagosians” and “A Sunday Affair”.
