Carlos Queiroz has resigned as Ghana head coach following the Black Stars’ exit from the FIFA World Cup at the last-32 stage.

Ghana’s campaign ended with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in Kansas City on Friday. The Black Stars managed just eight attempts on goal as they bowed out of the tournament.

Confirming his departure on Sunday, Queiroz reflected on his brief spell in charge, saying: “I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more.”

The experienced Portuguese coach, who previously led Iran at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, also challenged Ghana to build a stronger foundation for future success.

“The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch,” he said. Queiroz stressed that lasting progress would depend on improving the structures around the national team.

“Reaching a higher level should never be the destination. It should be the beginning of even greater ambitions,” the coach said.

“Black Stars’ success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent.”

The former Real Madrid manager and Manchester United assistant took charge of Ghana in April after Otto Addo was dismissed.

His tenure lasted only a few months and ended with the Black Stars falling short of advancing beyond the knockout stage at the World Cup.
