The Federal Government on Wednesday arraigned the President of the Borno State Youths Association, BOSYA, Samaila Ibrahim Kaigama, before the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism-related charges.

Kaigama, recently arrested by the Department of State Services, DSS, was brought before Justice Salim Ibrahim, where the charges were formally read.

After the proceedings, the court adjourned the case until September 25, 2026, for the commencement of trial.

Justice Ibrahim also ordered that Kaigama remain in the custody of the DSS pending the hearing of the case.

Kaigama came under public scrutiny following an interview on Channels Television last week, during which he admitted to having held discussions with Boko Haram insurgents regarding alleged ransom payments for kidnapped victims. The remarks sparked widespread reactions and prompted heightened security interest.

According to security sources, investigators have obtained what they describe as substantial evidence linking Kaigama to the alleged extortion of families of kidnapping victims. Authorities claim the evidence formed part of the basis for the terrorism charges filed against him.

The Federal Government has not publicly released the full details of the charges, and the allegations remain subject to judicial determination.

Open Evidence

The prosecution followed remarks Kaigama made during a television interview in which he admitted having discussions with Boko Haram members regarding alleged ransom payments for kidnapped victims.

According to security sources, investigators have gathered evidence they believe links him to the alleged extortion of families of kidnapping victims, forming part of the basis for the charges.

The full details of the prosecution’s case are expected to emerge during trial. As with all criminal proceedings, the allegations remain unproven until determined by the court.

The case stems from a public dispute involving Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South. Kaigama had previously made allegations linking the senator to the handling of an alleged ransom meant for abducted residents of Ngoshe in Borno State.

Ndume has strongly denied the allegations, insisting that he neither negotiated with terrorists nor acted as an intermediary between kidnappers and the government or private individuals.

He said his only involvement was to alert the National Security Adviser, the DSS, the military and other security agencies after Kaigama informed him about a video purportedly released by Boko Haram demanding ransom.

The senator also alleged that he later distanced himself from Kaigama after suspecting he was soliciting money from families of victims and called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
