The United Kingdom Government has officially opened applications for the 2026/2027 Chevening Scholarships, inviting outstanding professionals, future leaders and changemakers from more than 140 countries and territories, including Nigeria, to apply for fully funded master’s degree programmes.
Applications open on August 4, 2026, and close on October 6, 2026, giving eligible candidates about two months to complete the highly competitive application process at leading universities across the UK.
Chevening is the UK Government’s flagship international scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, FCDO, in partnership with universities and other organizations. Established in 1983, the programme seeks to identify individuals with strong leadership potential, academic excellence and a commitment to driving positive change in their home countries after completing their studies.
The scholarship provides comprehensive financial support for a one-year taught master’s degree at eligible UK universities. Successful applicants receive full tuition fees, a monthly living allowance, return economy airfare, arrival and departure grants, travel support for approved Chevening events and access to exclusive leadership development and networking opportunities throughout their stay in the United Kingdom.

Scholars also become members of the global Chevening alumni network, which now includes more than 60,000 professionals occupying leadership positions in government, business, academia, media and civil society worldwide.
According to the UK Mission, the scholarship is designed not only to support academic excellence but also to strengthen international partnerships by connecting emerging leaders from diverse backgrounds. Applicants are expected to demonstrate leadership qualities, professional achievements and a clear vision of how they intend to contribute to the development of their countries after returning home.
Nigeria has remained one of the programme’s biggest beneficiaries in Africa. Since the scheme began, more than 1,500 Nigerians have received Chevening Scholarships, with many alumni going on to hold influential positions in government, diplomacy, journalism, education, business and the private sector.
The programme has become one of the most sought-after international scholarships among young Nigerian professionals seeking postgraduate education abroad.
Prospective applicants are required to submit their applications online through the official Chevening portal, select eligible UK universities and courses, and provide evidence of academic achievement, work experience and leadership potential.
Shortlisted candidates will undergo interviews before final selections are announced in 2027 ahead of the commencement of studies in the UK.
The UK Government encouraged interested candidates to begin preparing their applications early, noting that the selection process is highly competitive and places strong emphasis on leadership, networking ability and a demonstrated commitment to creating lasting impact in applicants’ home countries.
