The naira continued its positive run against the United States dollar on Monday, appreciating by N8.07 at the official foreign exchange market to close at N1,349.53 per dollar.
Data published on the official website of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, showed that the local currency strengthened from the N1,357.60 per dollar recorded at the close of trading on Friday.
The latest movement represents a 0.6 per cent appreciation in the value of the naira against the dollar at the official market.
The gain further extends the currency’s recent positive performance after the naira recorded appreciation for four consecutive trading days in the previous week.
The latest improvement comes amid continued developments in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market, with movements in the exchange rate closely monitored by businesses, investors and consumers because of their impact on the cost of imported goods and services.
The naira-dollar exchange rate also remains an important indicator of conditions in the country’s foreign exchange market, particularly as the Central Bank of Nigeria continues efforts to improve market stability and strengthen confidence in the local currency.

The naira’s appreciation at the official market could provide some relief for businesses and importers whose operations depend heavily on access to foreign exchange.
A stronger naira can reduce the local currency cost of dollar-denominated imports, although the impact on prices depends on several other factors, including global commodity prices, transportation costs, import costs and the availability of foreign exchange.
The currency’s recent gains also come against the backdrop of ongoing efforts to deepen liquidity and improve transparency in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market.
For consumers, sustained appreciation of the naira could potentially ease some pressure associated with imported products if the trend is maintained over time and reflected in retail prices.
However, analysts and market participants typically assess the naira’s performance over a longer period rather than relying on a single day’s movement, given the volatility that can occur in the foreign exchange market.
With Monday’s performance, the currency has continued to record gains at the official market, extending the positive momentum recorded in the preceding trading sessions.
Market participants will be watching subsequent trading sessions to determine whether the currency can sustain its recent appreciation against the dollar.
